Friday Update: 31 March 2023
Editorial
For the first time we are publishing an obituary. It’s for a “true stalwart of our great hobby”, Sue Austin. It has been kindly written by Sidney Hallam and Brian Vaughan and tells of how Sue and her late husband Trevor “made formidable advocates for the protection and advancement of our hobby“. I often read articles calling for detecting to be curtailed or even banned. It is thanks to Sue, and people like her, that these calls have not prevailed.
Our approach has been to highlight the good that detectorists do: advancing the study of numismatics and archaeology with their finds, unearthing numerous important artefacts which are now on public display, donating Treasure finds to their local museums, raising money for charity or reuniting families with lost possessions. We hope Sue would approve.
In PAS finds this week we have another good example of the good work of detectorists, whose finds have reshaped the thinking about the production of Bronze Age arrowheads.
We also have the results of Hosker Haynes first auction and five more readers’ finds.
