Silver half dollar

The person who unearthed this coin asked to remain anonymous. I was told that it was located in a field with the aid of a detecting machine.

This rather surprising find is a silver half dollar, which was struck to circulate in the United States of America. It is an example of the seated Liberty type and either side of the date – 1853 – there is an arrow. There is no mint letter/letters, so this half dollar will have been struck at the mint situated in Philadelphia. The total number of this date and type struck at Philadelphia is recorded as 3,532,708.

Valuation

The coin would grade about EF with no defects, so it is in remarkable condition for a detecting find. To a collector of USA coins it should be worth £220 to £250.
