A distinctly Scottish feel to this week’s update. It was announced this week the news of the largest medieval coin hoard find in Scotland since the 19th century. And, this week we had our first Scottish gold coin sent in by a reader. There’s more readers’ gold too in the form of a gold stater of the Trinovantes.

We’ve being going for just over two years now and many of you may have been wondering when we will eventually get round to doing a link between Virgil and Chaucer to a detecting find. This week, the wait is over with a PAS find of a brooch with the inscription “Amor Vincit Omnia“.

Described as “an absolutely amazing find“, the details are a bit thin and there don’t appear to be any pictures available; we’ve had to use a stock photo of some similar coins. However, we’ve brought you what we know.

A medieval brooch with a well know Latin phrase “Amor Vincit Omnia“; a phrase coined by Virgil and used by Chaucer. Plus, some “Ormonde” money considered to be of National Importance, a denarius of Otho, an unusual seal matrix and a silver thimble, or is it?
