Shilling of Philip and Mary
Some coins turn up regularly as detecting finds, others hardly ever or never at all. Pictured here is a shilling of Philip and Mary, which was unearthed from Bedfordshire soil by Heath Huntington on 18 November. Over the last 25 years I’ve seen only three or four similar coins as detecting finds so they are certainly rare.
This shilling has the full titles, a mark of value (XII) and it is dated 1554, so it is the type listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 2500. When a coin like one this surfaces it would create a glow in the heart of even the most experienced detectorists.
Valuation
The obverse is very slightly double struck and has a few scratches but it is otherwise in Fine condition. The reverse is better and would grade good Fine. In its present state of preservation it would be worth around £400 to a collector.
