Half Groat of Edward III
John Lashmar asked if I would identify this hammered silver coin and give him some idea of its possible value.
It’s a coin of Edward III, which measures about 20mm in diameter so it must be a halfgroat. The coin was struck during series E of the fourth coinage, pre treaty period, so it dates from1354 to 1355. The inner legend on the reverse reads CIVI TAS EBO RACI, so it is a product of the mint at York rather than the one in London.
Valuation
The coin looks to have lost a piece from the edge at the base of the obverse and overall it would grade only Fair. A plus point is the mint, which is scarcer than London. However, in its present condition I would price this halfgroat no higher than £20.
