We’re always very appreciative when readers share their story of one of their finds; this week Kevin Lee has kindly sent in his own account of the day he made his find of a lifetime.

In readers finds the addition of a countermark on a coin significantly increases its value. In PAS find is the story of how “Crux Pellit” coinage led to the execution of the Earl of Mar. Plus we have the incredible story of Charles Masson, a 19th Century adventurer, and how he is linked to a Roman period ring found in County Durham.

Last November Kevin Lee had a big decision to make. Should he keep his wife happy by doing some decorating or go out detecting with his mates. The image of this ring may give a clue as to what he decided to do.

The countermark on Martin Scowen’s coin turns an ordinary coin into an extremely rare one

Runner Up

Charles Masson, 19th century explorer, and a Roman ring

This fairly ordinary cast copper alloy ring was recorded by the PAS a couple of weeks ago. It is a Find of Note of Regional Importance, probably linked to an extraordinary 19th Century explorer, Charles Masson.

PAS Finds

This Scottish copper threepenny piece led to the hanging of Robert Colchrane, Earl of Mar. Plus a nationally important radiate of Carausius a Medieval Reliquary box (with hair) and a figurine of Jupiter.
