Friday Update: 9 December 2022
Editorial
As many detectorists will know, the hobby can sometimes be an emotional roller coaster ride. One of our readers’ finds this week is a coin which he thought was nothing special when he unearthed it. Excitement grew as he started to clean it and saw some gold. Then back down to earth as on further cleaning, base metal was visible beneath the gold plating. However, we do have two other readers with better luck; hammered coins, with gold all the way through.
In PAS finds is the story of Roger de Moulins, eighth Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller and a Roman Manus Fica (“fig hand”) amulet.
Two good news stories to bring you: It’s well done to Solent Metal Detecting Club for raising funds for a charity in their local community. Plus the story of the excitement of a detectorist’s first Treasure find. The farmer who owns the field said she was happy for detectorists to go on her land, saying “It is nice to let people enjoy their hobby“. All this goodwill is making me feel quite festive and I think I might go and open the Christmas sherry.
