Half noble of Edward III

This hammered gold coin was found a few years since by Wayne Brown. All Wayne knows about it is that it’s a half noble of Edward III so he asked me to provide more information about, including some idea of its possible value.

On the obverse the legend ends with FRANC, so it dates before the treaty period. On the reverse there are trefoils in the spandrels of the treasure, a pellet either side of the top fleur de lis on the ornate cross and a Lombardic letter E in the centre. All this adds up to the coin being an example of the fourth coinage, pre-treaty period, series Gg.

Valuation

The flan looks to be slightly bent, which is a minus point but easily rectifiable. The obverse would grade good Fine, the reverse VF and the flan has excess metal outside the outer circle so it definitely has not been clipped. In its present state of preservation a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £1,200 to £1,500.
