Editorial
A common thread this week is the Tealby hoard; some 6,000 pennies of Henry II found during the reign of George III:
In a review of Noonans’ June auction, one of the star lots is a detecting find from this January. It’s a “unique” penny produced during the reign of Stephen but it’s something of a mystery who by.
In PAS finds we have a particularly bad example of a Tealby penny. We look at how this issue was the result of the Anarchy of Stephen’s reign where every Tom, Dick and Harry produced their own coins. We also tell the story of the curious personalities behind the disposal of the Tealby hoard.
And our Find of the Week is a Guinea of George III, minted a few years before the hoard was found.
