Steve has been very lucky to find this coin, for it is a denarius of Otho

Several different busts appear on Edward VI profile shilling and most are very similar to each other, so they can cause much confusion.

This shilling has mint mark bow on both sides and is undated.

This shilling was struck during the third period of debasement and contains only about one quarter the amount of silver that it should do.

The groat was struck during the first reign of Edward IV, which lasted from 1461 to October of 1470.

It’s a shilling of George III, which was struck during the New Coinage (1816 to 1820)

A plus point is that it is a large silver coin

Occasionally a fake can be just as interesting as the genuine article.

The finder of this coin initially believed his find was a penny of Henry I. It does look like a type XV penny of Henry I but it is something far more significant.

The coin would grade about VF but the high points on both sides have been eaten into; this will be due to it being in damp conditions for a few centuries.
