York penny of Henry V
This hammered silver coin came in from John Lashmar, who asked for a full ID and a valuation.
The coin is a York penny of Henry V – the king who scored a great victory in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. On the obverse there is an annulet to the right of the king’s hair and to the left is a cinquefoil with a pellet above (near the crown). The centre part of the obverse legend is unusual in that it reads REX AnGL E with a pellet before and a double satire stop after the E.
On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS EBO RACI with a saltire after TAS. In the centre of the reverse is a quatrefoil.
All the preceding information adds up to this penny being an example of type E, which is quite rare (number i787 in the Standard Catalogue). The quatrefoil on the reverse indicates this coin was struck for the Archbishop of York rather than King Henry.
Valuation
Part of the obverse legend is weak but this side is otherwise in Fine condition. The reverse is better with all the lettering clear. It’s a decent specimen of a rare type so my price range would be £60-80.
