Voided long cross penny of Henry III

This coin was found many years since by Colin Person. It’s a voided long cross penny of Henry III, of which I have seen thousands of examples. I saw it for the first time not long after it was found but Colin has just contacted me again, to tell me that someone on the internet has said they want to buy a coin of this particular type. Therefore, he sent in the images again.

Most voided long cross pennies of Henry III are quite common and they turn up regularly as detecting finds. However, there are some rarities amongst the series and this is one of them.

The obverse looks like most other Henry III pennies except for the fact that the legend starts at the top of the coin. The legend and style of the king’s crown points towards this penny being a coin of class 4a. Over the last 25 years this is only the second penny of class 4 that I have seen as a detecting find.

On the reverse the legend reads DAV ION LVN DEN (the last two letters joined together) so the moneyer is Davi and the mint London. In the Standard Catalogue this coin is listed as number 1365.

Valuation

Colin’s find is well struck and in almost VF condition. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then I would set the pre-sale estimate at £350.
