Tower Mint halfcrown of Charles I
Steve Bartlett asked for a valuation on this coin in order to give a figure to the owner of the land on which it was found.
The coin is a Tower Mint halfcrown of Charles I, which has been clipped to the inner circle. Steve has been told it was clipped to form a shilling and he wanted to know if this is correct.
I’ve seen a few late Tudor and Stuart coins clipped to the inner circle. Quite why this was done I can’t say. If a halfcrown was cut down to the size of a shilling it would still weigh more than twelve pence due to the thickness of the flan. Therefore, a clipped coin like this one makes no sense at all.
Valuation
Due to the wear and the clipping this coin would count as a curiosity rather than a collectors’ piece. My valuation figure would be no higher than £20.
