Timeline sell Ryedale Bowl for £28,000

On 5-9 September 2023, Timeline held an auction of Ancient Art, Antiquities, Natural History & Coins. This included several detecting gold finds, the best of which are have selected below. The pick of these is the Ryedale Bowl, which was found earlier this year.

‘Ryedale’ Anglo-Saxon Bronze Hanging Bowl

Estimate: £20,000 – £30,000
Hammer: £28000

This almost complete Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl was found by detectorist Chris Ulliott on 5 February 2023 in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. It was recorded at the PAS as YORYM-59523A where it was considered a Find of Note of Regional Importance.

Hanging bowls have their roots in the Roman period and as the PAS record says “were highly valued objects in the Anglo-Saxon cultures of eastern Britain and were typically included in furnished burials, contexts that date them to the mid sixth to late seventh century“.

“Braintree” Bronze Age Axehead hoard

Found in Braintree, Essex on 14 August 2019, and disclaimed as Treasure, the auctioneer says it is currently on display at Harwich Museum, Essex. It dates to 900-800 BC.

Anglo-Saxon Manuscript Mount

Found in East Anglia. The auctioneer describes it as Hiberno-Saxon workmanship and suggests that it is possibly a book mount. It is dated to c. 7th-8th century.

Found near Grimsby in 2015. Dated to c. 6th – 7th century the auctioneer suggests it is a mount from possibly a shield or saddle.

Medieval seal matrix of Count Robert

Found near Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, circa 2008. Legend reads LE * S * ROBERTI * LE CONTES. The image is a knightly device of a helmet with shield of arms bearing three bull’s heads cabossed and chevron. The auctioneer notes that three bulls’ heads appear on the arms of the Beverley family.

Penny of Ceolnoth

Found in Nottinghamshire. A penny of Ceolnoth, Archbishop of Canterbury. On the reverse, HEBE / CA MO in the long cross and N E T A in the angles giving HEBECA MONETA – the moneyer Hebeca at Canterbury mint.

Penny of Offa, moneyer Wihtred

Found on 9 April 2020 near Hacheston, Suffolk and recorded at the PAS as SF-87E18C. The reverse reads +P IH TR E for the moneyer Wihtred. Mint uncertain, maybe Ipswich. It’s a new variety for this moneyer and was a Find of Note of County Importance.
