Stater of the Iceni

A detectorist signing himself as Rick said this Ancient British gold coin was found by his great uncle. It was believed to be a great rarity and I was asked for my opinion on its possible value.

On the obverse are back to back crescents with pellets inside the curves and a trefoil above and below. On the reverse is a horse facing right with four pellets below the head, a rosette of pellets above and below the body, a sun with a trefoil centre above and a ‘ladder’ below.

This is a gold stater of the Iceni and is an excessively rare variety of the Freckenham type. In Ancient British Coins several different coins are listed of the Freckenham type but not this one.

Valuation

As I’ve said on previous occasions, the most important factor in relation to the value of any coin is its state of preservation. The struck-up areas on both sides of this stater are near VF but the flan is oval, flat in places and there are striking cracks in the edge. Therefore, it has a number of negative points that would have an impact on its value. After allowing for the plus and minus factors, if I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then I would set the pre-sale estimate at £900-1,200.
