Solidus of Valentinian II
This Roman gold coin was unearthed by Rob Warwick on the 12th of March. In order to pass on a figure to the owner of the land on which the coin was found, Rob asked for a valuation.
The coin is a solidus of Valentinian II, whose dates are AD 375 to 392. On the obverse, facing right, is a bust of the emperor and the legend on this side reads D N VALENTINIANVS IVN P F AVG.
On the reverse two emperors are seated side-by-side on a throne, behind which is the hovering figure of Victory. The legend reads VICTOR IA AVGG and in the exergue are the mint letters for Trier (TROBS). In volume V of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this type of solidus is listed as number 20176 and is dated to AD 377 to 380.
Valuation
The edge is a bit rough in places but the obverse would grade good VF and the reverse EF. This gold solidus has survived remarkably well after being in the soil for close to 16½ centuries. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then I would set the pre-sale estimate at £900-1,200.
