Groat of Henry VI

P. J. Mitchell sent in the images of this coin on behalf of his 83-year-old neighbour, who needed a valuation on it.

The coin is a groat of Henry VI. On the obvers there are rosettes in the legend and a mascle after REX. The inner legend on the reverse reads VIL LA CA LI SIE, with a mascle before LA, a double saltire stop after it and a rosette after SIE. All this adds up to the being a product of the rosette mascle coinage and the mint is Calais, which had been in English hands since the reign of Edward III.

Valuation

The coin would grade good Fine and does not look to have been clipped. This isn’t a rare coin but groats are popular with collectors so my price range on this one would be £70-80.
