St. Edmund memorial coinage penny
David Rauchfliesch asked on behalf of a friend for a full ID and a valuation on this find, which he believed to be a Viking coin.
Within the inner circle on the obverse is a letter A. On the reverse there is a cross inside the inner circle and the surrounding legend starts with +YY. This is a penny of a type listed as the St. Edmund memorial coinage. It was struck in the area of East Anglia under Viking control.
The quality of this type varies between early well struck coins with literate legends and later specimens with blundered legends. The example featured here is one on the later pennies with a blundered legend on both sides. Many Viking coins are rare but examples of the St. Edmund memorial coinage could only be described as being scarce.
Valuation
The coin has little if any circulation wear and all the detail is clear. Unfortunately, it has a large edge chip and this would have a significant impact on its possible commercial value. If I was cataloguing this coin for sale at auction then in its present condition I would set the pre-sale estimate at £80-120.
