Halfgroat of James I

The finder of this hammered silver coin signed himself as James. It came in with a request for more information, including the grade of preservation and a valuation.

The coin is a halfgroat of James I, which was struck during the first coinage (1603-4).  On the obverse is a bust of the king with II (standing for two pence) behind. This is one of the very few English coins to have no lettering on the reverse. The mint mark on both sides is a thistle, which is appropriate as King James was born and raised in Scotland.

Valuation

This halfgroat is flat n places but is above average for a detecting find and would grade about VF for the type. In its present condition it should be worth £70-80 to a collector.
