Sixpence of James I

This is another coin unearthed in Cumbria by Steve Bartlett but this one turned up on 29 March on a new permission.

Steve’s find is a sixpence of James I. It was struck during the second coinage, it has the fourth bust of the king on the obverse and the mint mark on both sides is a tun; the mark on the reverse might be struck over book.

Sixpences of James I are not particularly scarce and over the years I have seen several as detecting finds. However, this one has 1615 over the shield on the reverse, which is rare date.

Valuation

The obverse is only about Fine but the reverse is better. As the date is rare my price range would be £70-80.
