Penny of King John?
The finder of this coin wished to remain anonymous. I was told it was found just of Sutton Coldfield High Street, presumably on the pavement.
The coin is a voided short cross penny of King John. On the reverse the legend reads SIMON ON CAN, so Simon is the moneyer and Canterbury the mint. Immediately before SIMON is a cross pommee and on the obverse the letter S is reversed in hENRICVS. Therefore, this coin is an example of class 5a2.
Valuation
This penny of John would grade nearly VF and 5a2 is a scarce class. Therefore, to a collector it could be worth around £200. However, it really needs to be checked out. With just photographs to work from I can’t be certain of its authenticity. It might be genuine but the images suggest to me that it could be a cast forgery.
