Sixpence of George II

The images of this 20mm diameter silver coin came in from John Hall, who wanted to know what it might be worth.

The coin is a sixpence of George II and is dated 1758 on the reverse. This date and 1787 are the most common dates of the 18th century for sixpences.  However, both dates are rare as detecting finds. This is because there was an acute shortage of silver coins throughout the 18th century. This shortage led to widespread hoarding. On the intermittent occasions that freshly struck silver coins were issued most were hoarded by banks, businesses and individuals.

Valuation

The obverse of John’s find would grade near VF, the reverse VF but the surfaces, instead of being silvery, look to be grey in colour and this is a minus point.  In its present condition my price range would be £20-25.
