Sixpence of Elizabeth I

Glyn Peak told me that he had unearthed this coin on the 3rd of September. He said the last digit of the date looked peculiar so he asked for my opinion on it.

The coin is a sixpence of Elizabeth I. It is dated 1578 on the reverse and the mint mark is unclear but will be a Greek cross.

In 1578 the figure 8 still had a flat top, which does make it look rather peculiar. On Glyn’s coin the lower part (round) is solid; this could be due to a clogged up die or that the 8 had been overstruck in the die on a 7 or a 6. It was not unusual for dates to be altered in dies that still had some life left in them at the end of a year.

Valuation

The obverse would grade only Fair; the reverse is Fine but has been struck well off centre. 1578 isn’t a scarce date so my price range would be no higher than £28 to £35.
