Billon follis of Constantine I

The Roman coin pictured here was sent in by Mike Ruczynski to be identified and valued. At the top of the obverse us a hole, which might have been put there during Roman times or later.

On the obverse is a veiled and laureate head and a legend hat reads DIVO CONSTANTIO PIO. On the reverse is an altar flanked by eagles and the legend on this side reads MEMORIA FELIX. Beneath the altar are the mint letters for Trier (PTR).

The coin is a billon follis (25mm in diameter), which was issued by Constantine I in honour of his father, Constantius I. It is one of the varieties grouped together as number 798 in Roman Imperial Coins. The date of striking of the type is AD 307-09.

Valuation

This is a scarce coin but the hole with have a significant impact on its possible commercial value. It’s weak in places but in near Fine condition but with the hole I’d price it no higher than £3 to £4.
