Silver unit of the Corieltauvi
This seems to be Ancient British week for here is yet another coin of that period. This is silver unit, which Glyn Peak said he had unearthed whilst detecting last weekend.
Glyn’s find is a coin of the Corieltauvi. On the obverse is a boar facing right, with a beaded ring above, an annulet below and a pellet below the tail. On the reverse is a horse facing right with the upper forelegs like a letter W and all the other symbols are the same as on the obverse.
This silver unit is an example of the boar/horse type. A comprehensive catalogue of coins of this type was compiled by Matthew Rich and published by Chris Rudd in 2014. Glyn’s find is an example of Rich type 24c.
Valuation
Boar/horse silver units turn up fairly regularly as detecting finds but most are not in god condition. This example would grade VF and has good eye appeal so it is well above average. To a collector it shouldn’t be worth any less than £120.
