Ancient British silver half unit of the Belgae
This 10mm in diameter coin came in from Mike Ruczynski but it was found by a lady detectorist who couldn’t identify it.
The coin is an Ancient British silver half unit of the Belgae. On the obverse are back-to-back crescents and other symbols in the field. On the reverse we have four curved arms with a cogwheel in each quarter. In Ancient British Coins this type is listed as number 974.
The type is excessively rare. A footnote in ABC states that the attribution is uncertain but two examples (presumably the only two known) were found in Wiltshire.
Valuation
In the greatly enlarged images we received the coin looked as if it would grade only Fine. However, when this 10mm in diameter coin is actually seen and handled it may well look better. As it is a real rarity my auction estimate would be £300-400.
