Shilling of Elizabeth I
Rob Ford said this 31mm in diameter hammered silver coin was found on a pasture field in Wiltshire. He believed it to be an Elizabeth I shilling with key and woolpack mint marks.
Rob’s find is a shilling of Elizabeth I with M.M. key on both sides. His reference to woolpack might be because the key marks are over-strikes.
Valuation
I’d grade this shilling as good Fine to about VF for the issue and the amount of circulation wear is much less than usual for a detecting find. However, it is very dark in colour and this is a minus point. As it stands, my price range would be £150-180.
