Cut halfpenny of William II

Here is a cut halfpenny, which dates from the Norman period. The finder, David Woodhouse, had recorded it with the EMC at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

This is a type I cut halfpenny of William II, which is listed as number 1258 in the Standard Catalogue. On the reverse what remains of the legend reads CNTLEB and this has been attributed to Canterbury on the EMC.

Valuation

The coin would grade good Fine and is extremely rare but cut halfpennies sell for much lower prices than whole pennies. Despite being a great rarity, if offered for sale at auction the pre-sale estimate would be unlikely to be any higher than £250-300.
