Shilling of Charles II
Pictured here is the second find that came in this week from Glyn Peak. It’s an example of one of the first shillings of Charles II to be made by machinery instead of being struck by hand.
On the obverse is the first bust variety of Charles II and on the reverse is the date it was struck: 1663. In the Standard Catalogue shillings of this type are listed as number 3372.   Â
Valuation
I’ve seen two or three similar coins as detecting finds but they don’t turn up very often. This specimen is in very good condition for something that has been in the ground for roughly 350 years. The obverse would grade nearly VF, the reverse VF, and I can see no defects of any kind. The retail price on this coin would be £400 but if it was sold at auction the hammer price might be nearer £250.
