Scottish penny of Alexander III
Leon Boulton said that this coin was retrieved from a depth of ten inches in a pastured field. All I can say to that is that my machine wouldn’t have given off a signal had it passed over the same coin.
Leon’s find is a Scottish penny of Alexander III. It was struck during the second coinage and has a mullet with six points in the four angles of the reverse. It is an example of class E.
Valuation
Unfortunately, there is some ghosting on the obverse, which was caused by the deeply cut long cross on the reverse. The obverse would grade about VF, the reverse is VF, so a collector should expect to pay around £90 in order to acquire it.
