Quarter stater of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes
This Ancient British gold coin was sent in by Roger Paul. It was unearthed during what Roger said would probably be his last detecting session until after the harvest later this year.
The coin is a quarter stater of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes. On the obverse is a corn ear with CA to the left and MV to the right. On the reverse, facing right, is a prancing horse with a branch above and CVNO below.
In Ancient British Coins this type of quarter stater is listed as the Cunobelinus Wild type (number 2813). In the Standard Catalogue it is number 293.
Valuation
Some gold quarter staters are very rare but this isn’t one of them. It is listed as being only scarce in ABC. I’d grade Roger’s example as about VF and place upon it a pre-sale auction estimate of £350-380.
