Penny of William and Mary
This is the first of two coins that came in from Steve Simmons. Both finds were discovered on a pasture field somewhere in Wiltshire.
The coin is an early milled silver penny of William and Mary. On the reverse the date is divided up by the crown situated at 12 o’clock. The digits are not clear but as the legend on the obverse is continuous rather than broken by the conjoined heads the date must be 1689.
The obverse legend is the usual type for William and Mary except for a significant error. Instead of starting with GVILELVS on this coin it reads GVIELMVS. This error is on record but it is extremely rare.
Valuation
Steve’s find would grade better than Fine but there is slight damage to the edge and, worse still, a large piercing. A small coin with a large hole would normally be of minimal commercial value but as this specimen is a real rarity my price range would be £80-100.
