Penny of Elizabeth I
This quite small hammered silver coin came in from Steve Bartlett, who is fortunate enough to have gained permission to search some very productive sites in Cumbria. He always asks for valuation in order to pass on figures to landowners.
Steve’s latest find is a penny of Elizabeth I. The mint mark on both sides is a coronet, which dates the coin to 1567-70. Coronet is not a particularly scarce mark but it turns up less frequently than martlet and cross crosslet belonging to the second issue (1560-61).
Valuation
The obverse of the coin would grade only Fair but the obverse is Fine. In its present state of preservation my price range would be £20-25.
