Quarter noble of Edward III
Philip Clark asked for a full ID and a valuation on the hammered gold coin pictured here. I was told that it was recently unearthed from a field in Worcestershire.
Philip’ find is a quarter noble of Edward III. On the obverse the legend reads +EDWARD DE GRA REX AnGL, the stops are double saltires and there are trefoils on the cusps of the tressure. On the reverse the centre is a bit blurred and I can’t make out exactly what is in that position. All this adds up to the coin being struck during phase B of the treaty period (1361 to 1369). The coin is most likely to be the type listed as number 1510 in the Standard Catalogue.Â
Valuation
This coin is centrally struck on a round flan. The obverse would grade VF with eye appeal but the reverse isn’t as sharp and some of the detail is indistinct. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £500-600.
