Groat of Richard II
The finder of this coin signed himself as Hopeus Maximus. He said he never sells any of his finds but would like a valuation on this one.
Hopeus’s find is a groat of Richard II. These turn up rarely as detecting finds so he has been very lucky to have unearthed this specimen. The mint mark is a cross pattee, the stops are double saltires and on the reverse the letter N in LON DON is reversed. It’s an example of class II and is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 1679.    Â
Valuation
On the obverse the face is a bit weak but the legend is strong. The reverse is better overall and I’d grade it as good Fine. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £275-325.
