Penny of Henry III

A detectorist who signed himself as Mat is the finder of this hammered silver coin. He asked if it was a coin of King John and what it might be worth.

Firstly, this is actually a class 7c voided short cross penny of Henry III. On the reverse the legend reads +ILGER ON LVNDEN, so Ilger is the moneyer and London the mint.

Valuation

The obverse of Mat’s find has been struck slightly off centre but the coin is otherwise in good Fine condition. It’s not particularly scarce but is a decent example of the reign and type so to a collector it should be worth around £40.
