Penny of Henry III
A detectorist who signed himself as Mat is the finder of this hammered silver coin. He asked if it was a coin of King John and what it might be worth.
Firstly, this is actually a class 7c voided short cross penny of Henry III. On the reverse the legend reads +ILGER ON LVNDEN, so Ilger is the moneyer and London the mint. Â
Valuation
The obverse of Mat’s find has been struck slightly off centre but the coin is otherwise in good Fine condition. It’s not particularly scarce but is a decent example of the reign and type so to a collector it should be worth around £40.
