Quarter noble of Edward III

This hammered gold coin was unearthed by Andy Jones, who asked for a valuation on his find.

The coin is a quarter noble of Edward III. I have said before that examples of Edward III quarter nobles turn up as detecting finds more frequently than any other hammered gold coins. However, the specimen found by Andy is a rarity.

On the obverse the legend reads +EDWAR R ANGL Z FRANC D hY and all the punctuation marks are annulets. In the shield of arms there are four fleur de lis in the first quarter.

On the reverse the legend reads EXALTABITVR IN GAhLORIA, with an annulet either side of IN. In the centre of this side is a large pellet.

The preceding information adds up to this quarter noble having been struck from an obverse die of Series G and a reverse die of Series E. This being the case, it is a very rare coin.

Valuation

The obverse would grade good Fine. On the reverse there is a small weak area at 4 o’clock but this side is otherwise in VF+ condition. There is a bend on the edge but this could be straightened out quite easily by a skilled goldsmith. If I was cataloguing this quarter noble for sale at auction then in its present condition I would set the pre-sale estimate at £600-800.
