Penny of King John
David Marshall unearthed this voided short cross penny earlier this year and was told that it had been struck at the Kings Lynn mint. He asked if I could confirm the mint and provide a valuation on his find.
The coin is a class 5b penny of John and the legend on the reverse reads +IOhAN ON LENE, so the moneyer is Iohan and the mint Kings Lynn. I’ve seen a few specimens before but this is certainly the rarest mint for King John.
Valuation
The obverse would grade about VF. Unfortunately, the reverse isn’t as good, for it has been struck off centre and the last part of the legend is unclear, which reduces its eye appeal. However, the mint is sought after by collectors so even though the reverse lets it down a bit the coin should still be worth at least £200.
