Silver-gilt pendant found in Stroud is declared Treasure

A silver gilt reliquary box pendant was declared to be Treasure at an inquest in Gloucester last Thursday. It was found by David Mallows of the Wyvern Historical and Detecting Club at Harescombe, Cloucestershire on 29 May 2022. It was recorded at the PAS as GLO-43B24A. It is thought to date to the 15th century to mid-16th century.

The face panel depicts the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) and a vexillum flying a banner. Inside is the relic, a woven fabric and some white strands which are thought to be hair.

The pendant is currently at the Bristol Museum with Stroud’s own Museum in the Park expressing an interest in acquiring it.
