Penny of James I
Steve Hirst asked for a full ID and a valuation on the hammered silver coin pictured here, which is 13mm in diameter.
Steve’s find is a penny of James I. It was struck during the second coinage and the mint mark is a rose, which dates it to 1605-06.
Valuation
Both sides have been stuck off centre but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition so it is above average for a detecting find. It’s not particularly scarce but to a collector it should still be worth around £50.
