Anglo-Saxon Sceatta – Series K

We had an Anglo-Saxon sceatta on this website last week and this week we have another from Roger Paul, who needed a valuation.

On the obverse is a diademed and draped bust facing right. One hand forms a cup in which is a short cross pommee. On the reverse is a coiled serpent with its head facing right. From the serpent’s mouth a tongue extends into a curl.

Valuation

The preceding information adds up to this sceatta being an example of series K, type 32a, of which there are a number of varieties. It is struck from the same dies as lot 833 in the Abramson collection, which was sold at auction for £420 by Spink on 30 September 2021

The head on the obverse of Roger’s coin is a bit weak and overall the coin it is not quite as good as the Abramson specimen. It is still an attractive and rare coin, on which my price range would be £320-350.
