Anglo-Saxon sceatta – Series E
This Anglo-Saxon period silver sceatta was unearthed on the 20th of April by Anthony Hopkinson. Rather than being an English coin, this is a Continental sceatta.
This is an example of series E, variety K. On the obverse is a plumed bird with a pellet and a cross pommee below the head. The reverse has a standard with a pellet within an annulet in the centre, with a trefoil above and below and a bar in each corner.
Valuation
The coin is very similar to lot 1070 in part IV of the Abramson collection, which was sold by Spink on 30 September 2021. This was described as being “ . . . a rally good very fine [and] a very rare variety.” The pre-sale estimate was £120-150 but, surprisingly, the hammer price was only £110.
Anthony’s find is not quite as good as the Abramson example. However, the coin would grade VF and is a very rare variety of series E so my price range to a collector would be £120-140.
