North East Coast type stater of the Corieltauvi
John Lashmar asked for a full ID and a valuation on the find illustrated here, which is an Ancient British gold coin. The figure is needed in order to share the value with a farmer.
The coin is 18mm in diameter and 6.1 grams in weight so it is a gold stater. It’s an example of the North East Coast type of the Corieltauvi. On the obverse is the usual wreath motif. On the reverse is a disjointed horse facing left, with a space between the head and neck; there is a rosette below, a quatrefoil of pellets above and an ‘eye’ over the rump.
The exact range of characteristics on the reverse of this stater is not included on any of those listed as being the North East Coast type in Ancient British Coins. Therefore, John’s find is a very rare variety.
Valuation
The edge looks to have been squashed in an area from 1:30 to 3 o’clock on the reverse but apart from that smallish defect the coin is well struck and in VF condition. To a keen Ancient British specialist it should be worth around £700.
