Penny of Henry I

The detectorist who unearthed the coin pictured here signed himself as James. He said the coin was found in Buckinghamshire on the morning of 21 June and he wanted a full ID and a valuation.

The coin is a very rare penny of Henry I, who was the third Norman King of England. It’s an example of class 2 and has a profile portrait of the king on the obverse and a cross fleury on the reverse. Sadly, the obverse is in poor condition with little detail still visible. The reverse is better and the legend on this side reads +AELFPINE OM LVND so Aelfwine is the moneyer and London the mint.

Valuation

Despite being a very rare coin, the overall state of preservation leaves much to be desired. In its present condition I would price it no higher than £150.
