London farthing of Edward I
John Lashmar asked for a full ID and a valuation on this hammered silver coin, which measures only 11mm in diameter.
The coin is a London farthing of Edward I. On the obverse the legend reads E R ANGLIE and the king wears a very wide crown. On the reverse the legend read CIVI TAS LON DON. Therefore, this farthing will be an example of class 5.
The first English round farthings were struck during the reign of Henry III. However, the number put into circulation was small and today very few examples are known. A huge number of farthings were struck for Edward I but they used to be quite scarce until detectorists started to find them seemingly here, there and everywhere. This, of course, pushed prices down, which was welcomed by collectors.
Valuation
John’s farthing is a decent looking coin that would grade about VF so my price range would be £50-70.
