George III gold half guinea

This is the first of two coins to come in this week from Rob Warwick. It was found some years since and someone recently told Rob that it is a rare date.

The coin is a George III gold half guinea, which is dated 1766 on the reverse. A number of rare dates are on record for George III half guineas but 1766 isn’t one of them.

Valuation

The coin is a bit scuffed on the obverse but is otherwise in about VF condition. However, the surfaces are rather ‘dead’ looking and this certainly reduces its eye appeal. An obvious plus point is the fact that it is gold so even with the negative points it could still sell for around £400.
