Norfolk Wolf type stater of the Iceni

Jay Thompson asked if I could provide him with a valuation on the Ancient British coin pictured here.

Jay’s coin is a gold stater of the Iceni. The obverse is of the usual design with a wreath, cloak and crescents. On the reverse is a wolf facing right with pellets and crescents in the field.  Therefore, the coin is example of the Norfolk Wolf type and it is listed in Ancient British Coins as number 1893.  In the Standard Catalogue it is number 30.

Valuation

Very recently an example of ABC 1893 was sold at auction; the coin was graded as about EF but there was a flat area on the edge of both sides and the hammer price was £1,800. The coin pictured here would grade VF+ and is well centred so if I was cataloguing it for sale at auction I would set the pre-sale estimate at £1200-1,500.
