Penny of Baldred

The finder of this coin asked to remain anonymous. He asked for a valuation so that he could pass on a figure to the owner of the land on which this find turned up.

The coin is a penny of Baldred, who was King of Kent from circa 823 to 825. Within the inner circle on the obverse is a cross crosslet and the surrounding legend reads +BELDRED REX CANT. There is a cross inside the inner circle on the reverse and the legend on this side reads +DE OR MO Dm, which is the moneyer’s name; the name is divided up into sections by arms stemming from the inner circle. In the Standard Catalogue this is one of the types listed as number 880.

Valuation

All the coins of Baldred are rare and this example is an extremely rare die pairing. Sadly, the state of preservation leaves much to be desired. It would grade good Fine but it is crinkled, cracked and there is some loss to the edge. In its present condition my price range would be no higher than £500-600.
