Northumbrian styca of Wigmund

Anthony Hopkinson asked for a full ID on this 13mm in diameter copper-alloy coin, which is a very recent find.

The coin is a Northumbrian styca of Wigmund, who was Archbishop of York from AD 837 to849-50. On the reverse the legend reads +EDELHELM (both of the Ls upside down), which is the name of the moneyer.

The coinage of Northumbria was different to that of the rest of England, in that it included low face value base metal coins. The rest of England had only gold and silver coins and this caused problems when transactions were for small amounts. Therefore, it could be argued that Northumbria had a more user friendly coinage than anywhere else in England.

Anthony’s find is in very good condition for a styca and would be a welcome addition to any collection of Northumbrian coins.
