Penny of Alexander III

The finder of this coin said it was retrieved from a depth of six inches. He asked to remain anonymous but wanted a valuation on his find.

The coin is a Scottish hammered silver penny of Alexander III. It was struck during this king’s second coinage so it dates from circa 1280-86. Working from the style of the lettering, it will belong to type D.

On the reverse the four mullets in the angles have points that add up to 24. The total number of points on the various types can be anything from 20 to 28. On the basis of their scarcity, the totals have been attributed to various mints. However, even though this is a possibility, there is no documentary evidence to support this theory.

Valuation

There is a tiny chip at the top of the obverse but the coin is otherwise in VF condition. Type D is not one of the commoner ones so even with the edge chip I’d price this Scottish penny at £100-120.
